The Los Angeles Times is one of the most widely read and respected publications in the west coast, serving the second largest city in the nation, and the largest Latino population. In a recent article, the Times focused on inappropriate expenditures and claims made by two prominent Latinas serving the Schwarzenegger administration. The attention and public heat that article created resulted in both Latinas resigning their posts and perhaps ruining their careers.

Making errors in travel reimbursement claims is highly possible, especially for any high-ranking government official who travels to promote programs and activities on behalf of government. State civil service managers whose job is to oversee the accuracy of such reimbursement claims are responsible to point out errors and help claimants stay honest. Were these issues brought to their attention? Yes. Did the fix the problem? Yes. But, the Times made it seem like they had intentionally bilked taxpayers of hundreds of dollars for personal gain.
