Despite the U.S. Latino population’s diversity and widespread presence, certain Hispanic groups have traditionally been associated with specific U.S cities - Mexicans in L.A. and Chicago, Cubans in Miami, Puerto Ricans in New York.

But New York’s Hispanic face is rapidly changing. By 2024, a new study says, New York’s largest Hispanic group will be Mexicans, with Dominicans in second place. [feetin2worlds]

Hoy Newspaper folds paper, goes to Web

Posted by on January 1, 2009

Latino Media is not safe from the free media online news and info , its not surprising. this was a long time coming and most rational people could have predicted it.

The difficult economy has shut down another Spanish-language newspaper in New York City.

Hoy Nueva York’s editor, Javier Castano (ha-vee-AIR’ ka-STAHN’-yo), says he and his staff of about 15 were fired Tuesday without notice.

The 31,000-circulation paper was owned by ImpreMedia LLC and published Monday through Friday. Castano says falling advertising revenue and the poor economy contributed to the demise of Hoy (pronounced “oi”), which had been in circulation for a decade.

ImpreMedia also publishes El Diario/La Prensa in New York, La Opinion in Los Angeles and several other Spanish-language publications. A call to ImpreMedia was not immediately returned.

Another Spanish-language paper in New York, 24 Horas, went out of business in June.

Suffolk police and politicians systematically violate the civil rights of Latinos

Suffolk police and politicians systematically violate the civil rights of Latinos

Sadly people scapegoating minorities during tuff times is not new in this country we only need look at history and see how Latinos have been targeted as a problem during economic uncertainties.

Lou Dobbs and Michael Savage are one of the main culprits in pushing the hate and divisive rhetoric in regards to immigrants in this country and the sad part about this is Michael Savage is pushing his Xenophobic views and he as a Jew should know better then target a minority as the main problem to this country , did he not learn from history concerning Hitlers scapegoating of jews?

from: newsday.com

“As evidenced by the attack on an Ecuadorean immigrant in Brooklyn recently, hate crimes occur everywhere,” said police spokesman Tim Motz. “Our hate crime statistics are essentially the same as those of our neighboring counties and New York City.”

“Latinos in Suffolk County now live in daily fear for their physical well-being, victims of hate crimes at least on a weekly basis,” - LatinoJustice said.

LatinoJustice also said politicians in Suffolk:

“have repeatedly inflamed public resentment against the Latino community, even after brutal hate crimes had been committed against it.”

Sadly Some People just Don’t Get it , Tom Barry is one of them

Posted by on December 26, 2008

I found a interesting Commentary By Tom Barry the other day  ”Latinos for Latinos” Barry.122408.htm

Tom Barry has a Commentary about Hispanics wanting  representation that is offered to others minorities [Jews , Blacks] but singles out “Latinos” as the main culprits of asking for representation. I’m wondering if he did a Commentary about the Jewish lobby “Aipac” wanting , or pushing for their people in Obama’s administration or even during the past 8 years with Bush Jr and the amount of neo-con Jews added in top slots.

is this guy [Tom Barry] a Xenophobe? or just naive?

We also asked the President how big of a problem the illegal immigration debate poses for the Republican Party, particularly in light of the election results in Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Florida.

“If you’re labeled ‘anti’-people as a party, you will lose votes,” the President said flatly. “Parties have got to be positive. Parties have got to be hopeful places. And the immigration debate in certain states caused us to be labeled ‘anti.’”

The President suggested that Republicans were failing to reach a threshold of trust with Latino voters that allowed the party’s message to resonate fully. “Caring about people is an integral part of getting people to believe in you. A guy says, ‘they don’t care about me, they don’t respect my heritage’ - you can’t get their vote no matter what your philosophy is,” the President said.

Hateful Rhetoric In The Immigration Discussion

Posted by on December 23, 2008

By MARVIN D. NATHAN and MARTIN B. COMINSKY

The Houston Chronicle made some important discoveries with its recent series by Susan Carroll on the failure of law enforcement officials to deport or keep in jail illegal immigrants who commit crimes.

Certainly the Chronicle’s investigation pointed out shortcomings in our legal and immigration systems that need to be fixed. The release of any criminal who goes on to commit more crimes, whether he or she is in this country legally or not, can be called a miscarriage of justice.

What concerns us at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is despite Carroll’s attempts to reach readers with the results of research that “found that recent immigrants are far less likely than their U.S.-born counterparts to commit crimes and end up in prison,” anti-immigrant bigots seized on parts of her series to insult, stereotype, and even advocate violence against immigrants and others they perceived to be immigrants, especially Hispanics.

Here are some examples of the comments from Chronicle blogs:

• “This is a no-brainer to me. Start with the jails and get all those people deported, then construction companies, garbage companies, landscape companies, restaurants and must I go on?”
• “All of our grandchildren’s children are going to live in a third world country.”
• “We the taxpayers are footing the bill for these society leeches. The people from Katrina were bad enough. Our crime rate is still high.”
• “I got a great idea — just shoot them on the spot if they commit a serious crime in Texas.”
These comments should offend all of us, and must be challenged. One only need look at the Holocaust to see the results of relentless, pervasive bigotry. The Nazis began their campaign with words and pictures against Jews, Slavs, political dissidents, Gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals and the mentally.

An Honest Look at Immigration

Posted by on December 23, 2008

By Gerry Storm read more: from [BP]
Quote” The fact is the “Immigration Debate” is essentially a question of great human magnitude concerning the living conditions in Mexico. It is fueled by the promise of improvements in these conditions by migrating northward. If there was equal promise in both countries there would be no need to immigrate and thus no immigration problems at the border.” -

Long Island Anti-Immigration Xenophobes turn to Murder

Skin-color Bigotry

This sadistic murder happened only a few miles south of Farmingville, Long Island’s Ground Zero for anti-immigration xenophobes. It was the scene of the highly publicized near-death beating of two Mexican day-laborers, in 2001. It is also the town where, in 2003, the home of a Latino family was burnt down while they were sleeping.

Some people are asking where this hatred is coming from. Well, let’s start here: Long Island is America’s most segregated suburb. Its clear there’s a culture of exclusion cultivated by skin-color bigotry, here. - read more

Obama’s Latino Mandate

Barack Obama Needs The Latino Vote!!

Latinos backed Obama by a 2-to-1 margin on election day and could be the biggest force behind a longterm, center-left political realignment.

“The heavily Hispanic states of the Southwest, the ‘Cactus Corner,’ could be part of a winning strategy in 2008.” Well, sí, se puede.

Look at these numbers that were provided to us by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, which examined the 2008 Latino vote in thirteen key states. USHLI concluded that 67 percent of Latinos voted for Barack Obama, and only 31 percent for John McCain — more than a 2-to-1 difference nationwide. More…
